Green Waste Disposal
Background: Beginning January 1, 2023, California regulations prohibit green waste in the black trash cart. No trash or recycle cart will be emptied if it contains green waste.
California Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), the Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Act of 2016, required CalRecycle to develop regulations to reduce organics in landfills as a source of methane. The resulting Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) Organic Waste Reduction regulations place requirements on many entities including the Big Bear City Community Services District (District). For more information about CalRecycle, SB 1383 or the SLCP Regulations visit www.calrecycle.ca.gov/organics/slcp.
What is green waste?
Self-haul green waste disposal: District customers have the option to self-haul green waste to the Big Bear Transfer Station using their Disposal Use Permit (dump card) at no additional cost. Visit San Bernardino County Department of Public Works - Solid Waste Management Division for more details.
Curbside green waste collection: District customers also have the option to rent up to 3 green waste carts for curbside collection on a monthly or annual basis. Visit the Green Container rental page for pricing and instructions. For customers who choose to rent a green waste cart:
- The container will be emptied at least twice a month, from April 1st - October 31st. No regular green waste collection will be scheduled between November 1st and March 31st.
- All green waste must be placed in the green cart loose (no bags).
- Green waste will only be accepted from inside a green cart with the lid closed.
Curbside collection schedule: Exact collection days can be found on the Green Waste and Holiday Solid Waste Collection calendar below.
